The Wisdom of the Pooh

Some of the first books I remember reading to my son Matt after he was born were the stories of a special bear named Winnie. Written by A. A. Milne, the first Winnie the Pooh book was published in 1926 ... wow, 1926 ... that's 33 years before I was born. Talk about a character and some stories that have withstood the test of time and become ageless classics. Talk about someone who had an incredibly vivid imagination and an extraordinary way with words ... in my humble opinion, Mr. Milne's invention of the characters Winnie the Pooh, Piglet, Eeyore, Kanga, Tigger, Owl, Roo, Rabbit and Christopher Robin will forever define him as one of the greatest creative minds in history. Just as I read the Pooh series of books to my son, I would imagine that Matt will one day read the same stories of the little bear to his daughter C.J., if he hasn't already done so.

Those of you who keep up with me on Facebook know that I've been posting Pooh quotes for the last few days ... I do love me some Winnie the Pooh quotes for sure. There are just so many that speak to me, so many that are packed with wisdom that goes far and above the musings of a little bear with a penchant for honey. Quotes such as, “Rivers know this: there is no hurry. We shall get there some day.” or “A little consideration, a little thought for others, makes all the difference.” or “If there ever comes a day when we can't be together keep me in your heart, I'll stay there forever.” Come on, admit it, there's a depth of wisdom in the words of the Pooh ... yep, great wisdom indeed.

This morning, I posted on Facebook one of my all-time favorite exchanges between Pooh and his friend Piglet.

“Piglet sidled up to Pooh from behind. 'Pooh,' he whispered.

'Yes, Piglet?'

'Nothing,' said Piglet, taking Pooh's paw, 'I just wanted to be sure of you.'"

What a statement about friendship, about love, about loyalty ... even about faith ... yep, faith. It makes me think of all the times I've sidled up to God when I've been so very far behind Him, reached out and taken His hand, and whispered, "I just wanted to be sure of You." And guess what? He has never changed, never wavered, never failed ... I'm the one who needs to be sure of Him ... sure of His love, sure of His steadfastness, sure of His presence, sure of His forgiveness.

"I think I should be more like Piglet, God ... I think I should take a big lesson from the tiny pig. I think I should walk by Your side with my hand in Yours ... I think I should just be sure of You."
